What is Sodium CMC or E466 or Cellulose Gum or Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose?

Sodium CMC is prepared from cellulose and is obtained by the chemical modification from natural materials such as wood pulp and all plant structures. It is commercially prepared from wood and is used as a thickener, stabilizer, anti-clumping agent, dietary fiber and emulsifier in food products. Adding this can improve the shelf life and increase the fiber content in food.

What products is it used in?

Sodium CMC functions as a food thickener in beverages, baked goods, dairy products and can also be used to replace other thickeners like guar gum, gelatin or pectin. It is mainly used in ice creams. But otherwise found in soy milk, dairy products, sauces, toothpastes and is also used in cosmetics and personal care products as a binding and viscosity controlling agent. Many ‘low fat’ products may contain this in order to give the food a creamier and thick consistency and make it more appealing. 

What is the source of this ingredient? 

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a modified cellulose, and it is considered a semi-synthetic or modified natural polymer. It is derived from cellulose, a natural component found in the cell walls of plants. The modification involves chemical processes to introduce carboxymethyl groups, enhancing its properties. So, while the base material is natural (cellulose), the modification process makes it a semi-synthetic product. It is considered vegan and vegetarian as it is derived from cellulose that is present in plant cell walls and is then commercially prepared from wood pulp by chemically modifying it. It is often considered the vegan alternative to gelatin. 

Is this ingredient bad for me?

Some people might be allergic to Sodium CMC. For others, consumption in large quantities might lead to intestinal problems such as bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. It may also slightly lower the blood cholesterol level.
