What is Sucralose or INS 955 or E955?

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener commonly known as splenda and is also widely used as a sugar substitute. It’s chemically changed so it’s 600 times sweeter than sugar with almost no calories. It is usually identified in ‘sugar free’ ‘lite’ ‘zero calorie’ and ‘sugarless’ consumable products.

What products is it used in?

Sucralose or Ins 955 is used in cold drinks, coffee beverages, energy drinks, chewing gums, candies, yogurts, diet sodas and toothpaste too. It can be found in reduced calorie or reduced sugar foods without compromising on the taste or even in some protein powders and diet bars as they are hard to consume if not added with a sweetener or flavour. In medicine it is used in pharmaceutical tablets, toothpastes and mouthwashes. It can also be substituted in baking as it is more heat stable than aspartame. 

What is the source of this ingredient? 

Sucralose is a synthetic sweetener. It is derived through a multi-step process that involves the selective chlorination of sucrose (table sugar). The resulting sucralose is several hundred times sweeter than sucrose and is used as a calorie-free sweetening agent in various food and beverage products. Yes, it is considered vegan and vegetarian as the ingredient is obtained from sugar and the manufacturing process is considered vegan and vegetarian friendly. 

Is this ingredient bad for me?

Sucralose or Ins 955 can alter your gut health by reducing your good bacteria which eventually leads to poor immunity. Excess consumption of this ingredient will lead to headaches, allergies, gas and stomach pain.  It may also have a hand in weight gain and digestive problems.
